The American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a warning in 2013 stating that “wearing contact lenses overnight, regardless of type, increases the risk of corneal infection.” Dr. William Faulkner, who treated Groeschen, told the media: “Eye safety is paramount, and if contact lenses are worn overnight, I do not recommend it. Disposable contact lenses for daytime wear are by far the safest option for people who wear glasses or contact lenses.” Other risky behaviors among contact lens wearers include storing lens covers longer than recommended and not changing the solution in the case completely, meaning not completely emptying the case before adding new solution.
